Patanjali Yoga Sutras (2:30) describe five aspects of Yama, setting goals for self-control:
- Ahimsa (causing no harm to others)
- Satya (truthfulness)
- Asteyam (not coveting things of the world)
- Brahmacharya (sacred study)
- Aparigraha (controlling greed)
Devi Gita (7:6) lists ten aspects of Yama, setting goals for self-control:

- Arjavam (the purification of knowledge)
